US // Matson Navigation House Flag / Table Flag
Matson Navigation Company's long association with Hawaii began in 1882, when Captain William Matson sailed his three-masted schooner Emma Claudina from San Francisco to Hilo, Hawaii, carrying 300 tons of food, plantation supplies and general merchandise.
The house flag bears 7 white 5point stars arranged in a circle around a white disc bearing a plain block capital blue M on a swallow tailed red field. According to the Matson Navigation Companys public relations department the seven stars, contrary to popular opinion, do not stand for the seven Hawaiian islands, but rather the first seven ships owned by William Matson.
Flag on 10.5". Purchased at the National American Vexillological Association conference in Sacramento, California. Attended with Howard Madaus who gave a presentation on early American Flags. He used Ben Zaricor's 27 star US Flag in this presentation.
