"For These We Strive" is the motto printed on this 4" x 6" flag.
This is a reproduction of the color of the oldest US military unitl on active duty in the Army National Guard. First formed in 1774 by patriots of the social elite of Philadelphia that supported the Revolution, this unit was called the Philadelphia Troop of Light Horse Cavalry. The unit escorted General George Washington (newly commissioned as commander of the colonial forces) to take charge of the troops in Boston in June 1775. This flag was acquired by Ben Zaricor in 1997 during a visit to the unit's headquarters in Philadelphia.
Ben was invited to sit in the "Captain's Chair" of the unit. This is a 175 year old reproduction of the famous chair that was present in Philadelphia Hall during the debates regarding the Declaration of Independence, 1776. Benjamin Franklin is quoted making reference to the carving on the chair depicting a half sun: he commented that when the debates started he was not sure whether the sun was setting or rising but that as a result of the successful conclusion of the debates he now believed the sun was rising as a symbol of the future of the country. The chair is the only reproduction of that chair.
