Germany // SA / SS STANDARTE BEARER'S GORGET / 1933-1945
The Imperial German Army issued an order 15 June 1898 stating that the flag bearers were to wear a gorget and a shield-shaped cloth insignia. This gorget tradition was continued not only by the Wehrmacht and SS but also by several other organizations.
This is an SA standard bearer's gorget. Early on these were also used by the SS, until they got their own design. Complete with full length original chain.
In medieval times the gorget was a piece of armor protecting the throat. It is the only part of a suit of armor which has survived into modern times.
