This Firearm is a Smith's Patent Breech Loader which utilized a non-selfcontained rubber cartridge. Use dduring the American Civil War, this is a single shot cavalry carbine.
U.S. martial Civil War contract carbine; 39" long overall, seperates and breaks at the breech when the brass plunger is pressed upwards, allowing removal and insertion of rubber (later foil) cartridge containing bullett and propellant. The case hardened frame is marked on the left side; "Smith's Patent/ jUNE 28, 1857' (VERTICALLY) and "Address / Poultny & Trimble / Baltimore U.S.A." and undersling bar; "Manufactured by / Am'n M'ch'n Wks / Springfield, Mass" horizontally). Also marked on bottom of frame and barrel with serial number:"9215" and "92" & "15", left side of buttstock marked with federal ordnance dept. inspector's initials: "LFR" and "JH" in script lertters within oval cartouches, "LFR" also stamped on left side of barrel near breech and "JH" stemped on comb at buttstock; case hardened frame, the rest of the metal is bright "blue"
in mint condition.
