The flag, is a replica of the Official 1795 National Flag of the United States, has 15 stars and 15 stripes. It is from the Star Spangled Banner Flag House and Museum on Pratt Street, founded in 1927 in Baltimore, Md.
The building now museum was the home of Mary Pickersgill her mother, Rebecca Young, the true "Betsy Ross" of the American Revolution who was responsible for supplying the bulk of the flags for her uncle-in-law General Flowers, Quartermaster of the Continental Army under General George Washington. The person named Betsy Ross, also know as Mary Claypool, who gained fame and reputation of making the first American flag is now accurately identified by historians as a seamstress who contracted with Rebecca Young in making flags for the Penn. Navy and other flags as needed through Rebecca Young mother to Mary Pickersgill who made the star Spangled Banner for Fort McHenry in 1814.
Rebecca Young was living her remaining days with her daughter Mary Pickersgill assisting Mary with the construction of the flag for Ft. McHenry that latter became the symbol of the American fortitude when the fort flying the flags the family made resisted over 36 hours of bombardment.
Flag is made of high quality Cotton with embroidered cotton stars based not on the Star Spangled banner but on the official rendering of the 15 star flag that was the official flag pattern for the then young United states from for 18 years with 15 stars and 15 stripes the only time in the history of the United states it contained officially more than 13 stripes and the stars were fixed at a certain number.
It was the public that decided that adding a star for each new state was a tradition they wished to continue giving each state it's own symbolic contribution to our national flag. It is for these reasons 15 star and 15 stripes are most rare and sought after and the least understood by each succeeding generation.
