Print of "Custer's Last Stand".

Sub-collection: Maps & Prints

Custer's Last Stand" Print by Edgar S. Paxson.
This is a print of Edgar S. Paxson's famous 1899 painting, Custer's Last Stand. The original artwork was the product of years of historical research, which he then imaginatively reconstructed to summarize a great moment in history. Paxson, an accomplished painter of western themes, was inspired to work on the portrayal, enamored with the romance of Custer and the great Cheyenne and Sioux warrior chiefs after his 1877 arrival in Butte, Montana.

Paxson spent years researching the battle, interviewing Native American participants and soldiers alike. After almost twenty years of study, it is thought that Paxson began painting the 6' x'9' canvas in 1895. His work was interrupted by a year long stint in the US Army during the Spanish-American War. Completing the expansive work in 1899, Paxson sent the painting east for exhibition under the title, Custer's Last Battle on the Little Big Horn. Later shortened to Custer's Last Fight, the painting is generally accepted now as Custer's Last Stand. Regardless of titles, this work remains one of the iconic paintings of the 7th Cavalry's infamous demise.

Although this cannot be identified as one of the flags in the painting, Gen. Custer lost his fifth personal guidon at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, which is identical to ZFC0490. The original painting is at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming.
