This 50 star cotton United States interment or burial flag was made by the Watts Manufacturing Company (WMC) of Compton, CA. Formed in 1966 as part of the rebuilding of the City of Los Angeles after the 1965 Watts Riots.
The "Watts Manufacturing Co." was created by the Aerojet General Corporation using millions of Gov't. dollars to create jobs following the Watts Riots in August, 1965. WMC made a number of items under contract to the U.S. Government, including such things as canvas tents for the Army and Interment (Coffin or Funeral) Flags for the V.A.
number of similar Government contracted "regional" community-based Flag manufacturers located around the country. Some are entirely independent companies, and some are local branches of national charities such as Goodwill.
