USS Enterprise (CV-6) Crewman's Assoc.Certificate

Sub-collection: The War Museum - New York City

USS Enterprise (CV-6) Association Crewman's membership certificate
This is a crewman's membership certificate for Ernest P. Turp, who served on the USS Enterprise (CV-6) during WWII as a Quartermaster 3rd Class. Lovingly nicknamed "The Big E", the USS Enterprise entered WWII on 7 December 1941 and remained in service until a 14 May 1945 kamikaze attack left a gaping hole in her flight deck, compelling her to return to the mainland for major repairs. She participated in all of the Pacific Theater campaigns save one and is credited with downing 911 enemy planes, sinking 71 ships and damaging 192 additional vessels. As the most decorated ship of WWII, the Enterprise seems to have been created for the war she helped win.

Her veterans were and remain humbly proud of their ship's accomplishments and in 1954 the city of Chicago, Illinois chartered the USS Enterprise (CV-6) Association for the express purpose of remembering their gallant ship by holding bi-annual reunions and sponsoring museum exhibitions. While the Association no longer holds any national reunions, regional reunions continue for former crewmen, members of air groups, their families and Associate and Affiliate Members. The museums supported by the Association are: Planes of Fame Air Museum, Chino, CA; The National Naval Aviation Museum, Valle, AZ; NAS Pensacola, FL; Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, Charleston, SC; USS Lexington Museum On The Bay, Corpus Christi, TX and Eagle Hanger at Experimental Aircraft Association Air Museum, Oshkosh, WI.

This certificate was accompanied by other Enterprise artifacts, including a 48 star #10 ensign (ZFC3843); an admiral's absence personal signal (ZFC3844); an MK 2 USN Utility Knife & Sheath (ZFC3847 & 3848 ); a USS Enterprise, 1936 launching ashtray (ZFC3845) and Turp's USN Liberty Card from the USS Enterprise (ZFC3865).
