The Tiwi are an aboriginal people of Australia from the Melville Islands. The extremely complicated Tiwi flag is comprised of ten alternating equal stripes of white and yellow with a black fly. In the field, offset towards the fly are auspicious items from Tiwi culture.
A Tiwi spear arranged diagonally with the base on the lower fly edge, centered with the spear tip resting on the upper hoist corner of the black fly. Over the spear are three artifacts. These are drums or musical instruments. Two of the drums are topped with a bird. All are depicted in shades of ocher, yellow, white and black.
The black fly contains the stars of the Southern Cross (Crux Austral is)
All of seven points, all one point up. Centered in the lower hoist on the dividing line between the field and the black fly is an image of the Australian desert wood rose, which is indigenous to the Northern Territory of Australia, off of which the Melville Islands are located.
This important flag was made by National Flags of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, and presented to Ben Zaricor by the owner, Ron Strahn.
