Oceanic Society Burgee // 1969 - ?

Sub-collection: Sailing & Boating Flags

The burgee depicts in white on a dark blue background, the original seal of the society, circular it contains a representation of Sir Charles Darwins exploration ship Beagle.
Presumably this is symbolic of the societys mission. Surrounding the ship is a wreath made of stylized leaved, possibly kelp. Above the seal is the name of the organization.

Established in 1969 as a non-profit conservation organization, the Oceanic Society's primary mission is to protect marine wildlife worldwide through an integrated program of scientific research, environmental education and volunteerism. Their environmental approach is to collaborate with local communities in conservation initiatives, and to promote sustainable economies as an alternative to those that are destructive to wildlife and natural habitats. (see Oceanic Society website)

This flag and seal cannot be found on the societys Internet website as of 9/21/2003 and it is entirely possible the flag is now obsolete.
