Alaska State Flag // 1927-present

Sub-collection: Cities & State of USA

The Alaska territorial flag was designed by John Bell Benny Benson, in 1927. He was a Native American Indian teenager who entered a contest to design the flag sponsored by the American Legion.

The flag depicts the star group known as the "Big Dipper", and the North Star in golden yellow on a dark blue field. This is an overt reference to Alaskas geographic location as the northernmost state. (Alaska is also the Easternmost and Southernmost state.)

When Alaska entered the Union in 1959, the territorial flag became the state flag.

Flag was nmade by the Dettra Flag Co. of Oaks PA, prior to 1997.

From the Louise Veninga Collection.
