The current North Carolina State Flag dates from 1885, but is based on an earlier design used during the American Civil War. The date May 20th 1775 refers to the Mecklenburg
Declaration of Independence while April 12, 1776 refers to the Halifax accords; both of these are auspicious dates in North Carolina history.
The field is a horizontal bi-color, red over white, with a dark blue hoist bearing the dates on golden yellow scrolls above and below a single white five point star, one point up.
