Info out of encyclopedia of flags : "Adopted 1 July 1978. Black and ochre are the official colours of the territory. The stars form the Southern Cross constellation. The seven petals of the highly stylized Sturt's desert rose (Gossypium sturtianum) and the seven-pointed star in its centre represent the seven states-to-be of Australia."
