Germany // Imperial Navy / Officers Sword

Sub-collection: Edged Weapons

Imperial German Navy officers Sword. Blade etched with various naval devices; on the left are an Imperial German Crown, and arms on an upright anchor above a warship under sail. The reverse has an anchor. The guard is decorated with a crowned anchor. The lions head hilt has two jewels for eyes, a green eye for starboard and a red eye for port.

This sword was brought back from Germany after WWII by 1st Lieutenant Garnet C Menger, of the United States Army, 69th Division, 273rd Regiment, Third Battalion, Company M, Mortar Platoon Leader.

He acquired the sword from a conscientious young German Naval Officer who was home on leave and surrendered this sword when the town of Coldeitz was surrendered.

The sword was turned in as a weapon, but kept by Lt. Menger as a souvenir.
