Allied Airmans Chit, World War II

Date: 19421945
Media: Dyed leather
Comment: During the early years of World War II, American airmen serving in the China-Burma-India theater began using a special leather chit that was sewn to the backs of their leather flight jackets. These chits bore the flags of the United States and the Republic of China to identify the nationality of airmen who might be shot down over Chinese territory. Also, on a white section of the chit patch was an inscription in Chinese identifying the wearer as an ally of China and imploring safe passage to allied lines to the peasants who might find the downed airman.

Provenance: Acquired by the Veninga Flag Collection (LV90) in 1998.
