This single lithographed sheet depicts 50 different flags from the major nations of the word in 1873. In the 19th century, flag plates were often included in dictionaries and atlases. The colorful pages attract the eye and flags are often a page juvenile readers will be drawn to unaided by adults.

"Blacks General Atlas", was published in Edinburgh, Scotland by A. & C. Black. It was a popular Victorian era reference work that was readily available in libraries, both public and private, schools and commercial offices. Continuously printed in several editions, editions are known from; 1850, 1862, 1865, 1867, 1873, 1877 and 1898.

This lithographed frontispiece from the 1873 edition depicts the United States flag with only 30 stars instead of the 37 stars on the official flag.

Provenance: Acquired in 2008 by purchase.
