Designating Flags of the United States Army, 1861-1865.
This volume identifies the flags used by the Union Army during the Civil War. It was written, illustrated and assembled under direction of the US Army's Quartermaster General in 1887. It has a copyright date of 1888; it contains 89 total prints, including two shown prior to the title page. They were printed on extremely high quality paper utilizing the finest inks to create images that are bright, clean and of an amazing quality. The binding is cloth, with bright gilt on the front cover.
It is the penultimate work on American Civil War battle flags. It has been criticized for its concentration on the eastern theaters of the war and the fact that all of the illustrations were drawn to a consistent scale, when in fact many of the flags were field expedients whose actual dimensions differ from those in this work.
This volume was then reprinted by the Knickerbocker Press in 1997 as one of the "Civil War Battle Flags of the Union Army and Order of Battle" with a foreword by Steven J. Wright, who was the curator of the Civil War Library and Museum of Philadelphia, PA.
