The diver's helmet was chosen as an appropriate emblem for the branch of the Soviet Navy responsible for rescuing sailors in shipwrecks. The ensign for vessels in the Shipwreck Rescue Service was dark blue (for the sea) and bore the normal USSR war ensign in its canton. (See collection item ZFC1106.)
