Republic of China National Flag. - Variant

Sub-collection: China

Republic of China National Flag.
This is a small cotton variant of the national flag of Republic of China. The uniqueness of this flag is in the sunburst, which deviates from the specifications of the usual 12 foreshortened triangular rays surrounding the white sun (See ZFC1438 for a comparison).

The flag of the Republic of China was originally adopted as the naval ensign of the Republic of China in 1914, and became the national flag for all purposes in 1928. The red field represents China and is the color of the Han people, China's predominant ethnicity. The canton utilizes the flag of the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party) whose white, 12-pointed sun was seen as a symbol of progress.

After the 1949 declaration of the nationhood of The Peoples Republic of China on the mainland, only Taiwan continued to utilize the flag of the republic. This cotton variant is from the 1960s.

Provenance: Acquired by purchase.
