United States // 39 Stars / Flag Scarf

This noteworthy scarf's silk field is imprinted with 13 horizontal alternating red and white stripes each about 1.25 inches wide, top stripe is red, bottom stripe is red. Also printed upon the field, and extending through seven stripes from the top, is a dark blue canton (union) 8 inches wide on the fly x 9 inches, with 39 stars, each 1 inch across, printed on the obverse and reverse sides, in seven horizontal rows: 6-5-6-5-6-5-6. The four edges of the flag are machine stitched to the depth of .5 inches.

The .5 inch hemmed edge as well as size suggests that this flag derivative may have been made as a neck scarf at the time of the national's centennial in 1876. (It may have been sewn onto a pillow at one time).
