United States // 44 Star Flag / 8-7-7-7-7-8- horizontal rows

Catalog Description
This collectible and old United States flag is cloth and measures approx 28 inches by 18 inches. It came to us with a number of other flags, including the Duke of York's Standard, which were 'obtained' by a fairly collectible official at Melbourne's Station Pier in the 1910's -1920's. Supposedly, this particular flag came from a launch used by the U.S Fleet (the Great White Fleet) which visited Australia in 1925, but our research tells us that the 44 stars date to much earlier, ie 1891- 96.
This Flag became the Official United States Flag on July 4th, 1891. A star was added for the admission of Wyoming (July 10, 1890) and was to last for 5 years.
Which leaves us unsure if the 1925 story is correct, or if the flag might be from the earlier (1908) visit of the Great white Fleet. Did out-of-date flags remain in use in the Navy or was this one in particular used because of the "peace" connotation?

What we DO know is that the other flags in this collection ALL have some maritime connection, but we'll leave it to the buyer -assuming there is one! - to do some detective work. There is some fading, foxing, a few small holes and a couple of minor tears near the cord (LH edge) on the bottom white bar. Scarce & desirable.

Flag was acquired in Australia.
Flag was modified in order to fly it.
