"You're a Grand Old Rag" -1906 sheet music - The term "Grand Old Rag" was a term of endearment for the United States flag used lovingly by members of the Grand Army of the Republic, for whom the flag had a special meaning. George M. Cohan, the American producer, composer, and entertainer, heard the term used by a veteran of the Battle Gettysburg and wanted to incorporate it into a Broadway Musical. This he did, however, the public outcry compelled him to rename the song and play, into the now famous, "You're a Grand Old Flag."
