The hinomaru was the most ubiquitous flag that was decorated to make Good Luck flags. The national flag, white with the red circle which represents the sun, has particular significance to the Japanese since their creation myth maintains that they are descended from Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess. In Japanese hinomaru literally means "circular sun".
