Iconic National and International Flags

General George A. Custer's Third Personal Civil War Cavalry Guidon. This flag was only flown when Custer was on the field. This was one of Custer's more famous flags, as it served with him in the Civil War while commanding the US 3rd Cavalry Division from 1864-1865.

President John F. Kennedy Presidential Limousine Flag - Assassination in Dallas 11/22/1963. This flag, which President John F. Kennedy used throughout his 1000 days in office, was on the presidential limousine when his life was taken in Dallas. It was used throughout the 1000 days of the JFK administration.

USS Constitution No. 1 Ensign - 1845 to 1850. This 28-star ensign, made to commemorate the admission of Texas is from the most famous ship in the United States Navy, the USS Constitution. These U.S. ensigns with these particular star counts were official between 1846 and 1851.

17 Star, 17 Stripe U.S. Ensign, Privateer Blockade, War of 1812 captured by Captain James Clephan, HMS Charybdis This flag is significant for its rarity and symbolic importance. There are no other 17-stars with 17-stripes known U.S. flags to survive.

33 Star U.S. Storm Ensign - 1st U.S. Flag captured in Civil War at Pensacola, & USN officer recapture, January 1861 THE FIRST AMERICAN FLAG CAPTURED DURING THE CIVIL WAR. This iconic ghost of an American flag is the earliest documented captured flag from the American Civil War.

Second National Ensign of the CSS Alabama, June 1864. This flag is the second and final ensign from the CSS Alabama's last battle, hoisted after the spinnaker gaff on which she wore her ensign was shot away. This smaller ensign, likely a boat flag, was eventually struck in a battle against the USS Kearsarge off the coast of France in 1864.

France - National Guard Color 15th Battalion, 1870. Its inscriptions and distinctive finial can identify this flag, from the De Young Museum. Following the defeat of the French Army in the 1870 war with Prussia and the creation of the radical Commune in Paris, the regular Army was replaced by a National Guard.

U.K. Airborne Divisional HQ Pennant, WWII This Pennant came directly from the Estate of U.S. Army General Matthew B. Ridgway. The insignia of the British Paratroopers features the winged horse Pegasus beneath Bellerophon, slayer of monsters and, according to Greek myth, the first airborne warrior.

Gen. Philip Sheridan's Personal U.S. 35 Star Cavalry Headquarters Flag - 1864 This 35 star silk United States national flag (1863-1865) was used during the American Civil War by Major General Philip Sheridan as both the Cavalry Corps Commander of the Army of the Potomac and the Commanding General of the Army of the Shenandoah (1864 -1865).

Gen. Philip Sheridan's Personal Silk Battle Guidon 1864 This flag indicated Gen. Sheridan's personal presence on the field. This flag accompanied Sheridan through all phases of the Shenandoah Valley and Appomattox Campaigns in which he led and rallied his troops through some of the thickest fighting of the war.

English Patriotic Textile "Apotheosis of Franklin", 1785 - 1790. This textile was produced in England as yard good shortly after the American Revolution. Intended for the American market, this printed toile fabric was very popular and was used by American homemakers to make bed curtains, wall coverings, curtains, and other home furnishings.

50 Star U.S. Flag, The South Tower Flag, World Trade Center, NY. While searching through the rubble a volunteer with the FDNY discovered what he thought were fragments of clothing from one of the victims of the Sept. 11th terrorist attack. As he dug further, Bliss realized he had found the smoldering remains of a U.S. flag.

U.K. Exceptionally rare Union Jack flown on HMS Spartiate at the Battle of Trafalgar. A rare and finely preserved Union Jack flag which was flown from the jackstaff of HMS Spartiate at the battle of Trafalgar on the 21st October, 1805. It is the last documented flag to survive from that iconic battle.
