Flag Charts

"A Collection of the Principal Flags of the Nations of the World". This monograph, "A Collection of the Principal Flags of the Nations of the World, From the Best Authorities," illustrates 238 different flags on 16 hand-colored plates. Among the illustrations is an image of the 15 stripe United States Flag with only 12 six pointed stars.

"Flags of the Principle Nations of the World", 1837. This is a chart used by sea captains to identify the nationality of ships encountered at sea. Entitled, "The Flags of the Principal Nations of the World," it was made with printed copper engraving, hand colored, and was published in Philadelphia in 1837.

"Chart of National Flags", Henry Bill, 1858. This chart, measuring 19" x 23" was lithographed onto paper and features the flags of the major nations of the world in 1858. Intended for an American market, it prominently features an image of a 33 star United States Grand Luminary flag in the upper center.

"Johnson's New Chart of National Emblems", 1863. This color lithographic chart depicts several interesting flags, among them the 35 star U.S. Flag, the Russian American Company flag and the flag of the "Confederate States of America (so-called)".

"Johnson's New Chart of National Emblems", 1868. This color lithograph is similar to the 1863 edition, except that the U.S. now has 37 stars, the Confederacy has been replaced by Society Islands (Tahiti) and the American Broad Pennant depicted identifies the striped variant used between 1869 and 1876.

Flag Frontispiece from "Blacks General Atlas". This single lithographed sheet depicts 50 different flags from the major nations of the word in 1873. This edition depicts the United States flag with only 30 stars instead of the 37 stars as on the official flag.

Flag page from "Cram's Unrivaled Family Atlas of the World". This lithographed plate is taken from "Cram's Unrivaled Family Atlas of the World". The page depicts 39 different flags and ensigns from the major nations of the world. The U.S. flag on the page bears only 30 stars, instead of the 38 that were official in 1883.

Lithograph "Colton's National & Commercial Flags of All Nations". This color-lithographed chart notably includes Marryat's code of Commercial signals, British Admiralty code of commercial signals and Roger's code of commercial signals.

"State Flags", Greensboro, Frank Schaffer Products, undated (1981-1991). This flag chart was printed as a classroom activity poster sometime after the change to the Montana state flag in 1981 but before the changes to Nevada in 1991. The reverse has reproducible student worksheets for students for use in a lesson on state flags.
