36. American Ensigns, Jacks, Flags, Pennants and Named Vessels



An ensign is a national flag flown at sea while a jack is a flag of national character that is generally displayed in the bows of ships when at anchor or during the dressing of the ship. Jacks may also be used as special "signals" when displayed somewhere other than in the bow. A masthead pennant or commission pennant is the distinctive mark of a nation's warship.

Flags used at sea are more varied and complex than their counterparts ashore. Being able to "read" and understand these flags is indicative of a skilled mariner, for besides the design, often the position and manner of the way a ship wears her flags reveals much about not only the nationality, but also of the function, type and purpose of the vessel.
