The name Decatur is one of the most revered names in American naval history. Included in this collection is the number one ensign of the USS Constitution from her service as the flagship of the Mediterranean Squadron.
The USS Constitution was named by George Washington and was originally launched in 1797. She was built in Boston, MA and boasts three masts as well as a beautiful wooden hull. Her nickname is "Old Ironsides" and the 44-gun frigate is most famous for her contribution to the War of 1812 where she led forces in a fight against Great Britain.
It was in 1797 that she was used to "show the flag" in the generation after Stephen Decaturs brilliant victories in the Barbary Wars, then again during the Quasi-War and most notably during the War of 1812. "Old Ironsides" is now primarily used to encourage an understanding of the U.S. Navy during both peaceful periods and war and is often used in demonstrations and various public events that promote educational outreach.
The great naval tradition of flying the flag was continued by his namesake nephew Stephen Decatur, whose long career continued the Decatur familys naval calling and began a tradition where the female members of the family preserved the naval flags of their husbands, brothers and fathers.
