Star Spangled Banner Flag House (SSBFH) is one of the oldest museums open to the public in Baltimore, Maryland. As one of the earliest organizations dedicated to the study of flags, The Flag House and Star Spangled Banner Museum also became a repository for flags from other eras, and amassed one of the most significant flag collections in the nation.
The enduring popularity of the 13 star flag caused many of these flags from the Centennial and successive eras to be gifted to the SSBFH and included here are some of the 13 star United States flags that were formerly in that collection.
One of the most popular star patterns for early 13 star flags was horizontal rows of stars arranged 3-2-3-2-3 in the canton. Flags like this were ubiquitous during the celebration of the centenary of American independence and the subsequent Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 held in Philadelphia.
All but one of the flags in this grouping were, gifted to the SSBFH by Baltimore citizens in order to preserve them. The other was acquired by the SSBFH so it could be loaned to schools without having to risk older flags from the collection. Both the antique flags and the facsimile attest to the enduring popularity of the 13 star flag in American culture.
