75. Star Spangled Banner Flag House & Museum - 19th Century Flags



Star Spangled Banner Flag House (SSBFH) is one of the oldest museums open to the public in Baltimore, Maryland. As one of the earliest museums dedicated to the study of the national symbol that engendered the national anthem, the SSBFH also became a repository for flags from other eras, and amassed one of the most significant flag collections in the nation, including many from the late 19th century. The years between the Centennial celebration and the Spanish American War were dynamic with eight territories elevated to statehood leading to four official flag changes.

Presented in this Grouping are 38 star U.S. flags, used from 1877 to 1890. Most have the traditional rectilinear star patters while one bears the distinctive concentric ring pattern from the renowned Baltimore flag maker Jabez Loane. The 44 star flag (1891-1896) represents Wyoming in this Grouping. The 45 star flag enjoyed a longer tenure (1896-1908) and comprises the bulk of the Grouping.
