78. Star Spangled Banner Flag House & Museum 49 & 50 Star Flags



This Grouping from the Star Spangled Banner Flag House (SSBFH) includes the 49 and 50 star U.S. flags from that institution, and were collected between 1959 and 1997.

In 1959 the U.S. flag acquired a 49th star to accommodate�  the statehood of Alaska, and the� first 49 star U.S. flag was officially hoisted at Baltimoreâ��s Ft. McHenry at midnight on 4 July 1959, and then deposited in the collections of that cityâ��s oldest museum�  the SSBFH; that flag inaugurates this Grouping. Some of the other 49 star flags in the Grouping were also flown at Ft. McHenry.

The 50 star U.S. flags in this grouping range from the economic to the enormous but of special note is a small 50 star U.S. flag that was transported to and flown at the geographic extremes of the United States � Ka Lae (South Cape) � Hawaii; West Quoddy Head, Maine; Attu, Alaska and Point Barrow, Alaska.
