17. Westward Expansion - The U.S. Flag moves West

After the American Civil War, the Trans-Continental Railroad was completed and the United States turned its gaze westward. The period between 1867 and 1912 was as dynamic for the nation as the first quarter of the 19th century with the admission of 12 new states.

The Trans-Continental Railroad was built between 1863 and 1869 and was more popularly referred to as the "Overland Route". It marked one of the most ambitious and significant technological feats in America at this time after the construction of the Erie Canal back in the 1820s.

The opening of the Oregon Trail and the California Gold Rush marked the beginning of the Westward Movement. Presented here are the flags that were used to represent this westward progress and the states of the west are represented on the U.S. flag in their admission order.
